"PROJECT TAR HEEL --- Mayor Scott B. Berkley and C. G. Whitaker accepted honors for the F-102 named for the City of Goldsboro Saturday. Whitaker is the father of a man who was killed following a raid in World War II in which Japanese Admiral Yamamoto was killed. Left to right: Lt. Col. Carl T. Weaver Jr., commmander of the 482nd Fighter Interceptor Squadron; Whitaker; General James B. Tipton, commander of the Washington Air Defense Sector; Mayor Berkeley, and Major Jack W. Ragsdale, Jr., pilot of the plane."
