Key West: March 1964. The bunk room was rigged between trailers 3 & 4. Lt. "Jerry" Rose arrived at the 482nd in Feb. of 1963, and was promoted to Captain. He would be killed on an alert mission on Feb. 6, 1965. The intercept was on an American plane that had incurred problems and was flying very low and slow on a moonless night while attempting to return to Florida. Col. Hanna says, "He most likely had the gear down, speed brakes out, and power up as he was approaching the 'unknown'. His problem was he had taken off only 20 minutes or so earlier and was still very heavy. The Deuce was somewhat underpowered in that situation. So, on a black night with black water below and the other plane very close to it, his fate was cast. Having said this, I'd probably have done the same thing; I just wasn't there that evening. A wonderful, talented fellow."
