Robert VanOrden Sr.


Funeral services for retired Master Sgt. Robert VanOrden Sr., 66, of Pasadena will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Roman Church, 8499 Virginia Ave., Pasadena.

Sgt. VanOrden died suddenly Sept. 5 at his home.

He was born Jan. 13, 1940, in Ellensberg, Wash., and lived in Pasadena for 18 years.

Sgt. VanOrden was retired from the Air Force. He was a B-52 gunner during the Vietnam War, and was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He enjoyed cryptography and also had many other hobbies and interests.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice Doman VanOrden.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Deborah VanOrden; one son, Robert VanOrden Jr. of Tacoma, Wash.; one daughter, Patricia Simmons of Stafford, Va.; two stepsons, Dennis Sanschagrin of Sarasota, Fla., and Chad Sanschagrin of Bel Air; one stepdaughter, Meredith Anderson of Freeport, Texas; his father, Gene VanOrden of Phoenix; one sister, Alenn Leach of Phoenix; and nine grandchildren.

Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are by Gregory J. Gonce Funeral Home.
