John Robert Sears, 80, Sarasota, died Jan. 18, 1998. He was born Sept. 12, 1917, in Cairo, W.Va., and came to Sarasota 33 years ago from Wethersfield, England. He retired from the Air Force in 1965 as an E-8. During World War II, he served with the 106th Army division and was taken prisoner in the Battle of the Bulge in mid-December 1944. He was awarded the European Theatre Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart.
He was a Methodist, a member of Mason Lodge 114 and American Legion Post 83 of Pennsboro, W.Va., and a life member of Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Louise; and a sister, Evelyn L. Moneypenny of Kent, Ohio.
Services and burial will be later in Cairo. Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Gulf Gate Chapel, is in charge.
