LAYTON - Edward E. Pierce, age 75, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 after a long and courageous battle with heart failure. He was born on September 21, 1929, in Goldsboro, North Carolina, to Pauline Filler and Richard Pierce. He married his sweetheart, Mary C. Joyner, on April 1, 1950, and was later sealed to his lovely bride in the Salt Lake Temple.
Edward honorably served his country in the United States Air Force. He retired after 20 years of service and always felt a sense of appreciation for those brave men and women who served and continue to serve this great country in order to preserve the freedoms we all enjoy.
After retiring from the Air Force, Ed worked for the Dept. of Mental Health for the State of Oklahoma. While in Oklahoma, Ed served in many callings in the LDS Church (i.e., Bishop, High Council, etc.) while raising his family. He loved sports and every chance he had, he was found coaching the youth of his Ward, many times to victory. Twenty years later, Ed retired from the State of Oklahoma and moved his family to Utah to be close to his children who were attending BYU and Ricks College. As a result, he always rooted for the Oklahoma Sooners and the BYU Cougars.
Bored with retirement, Ed began working for the LDS Church at Promised Valley Playhouse in 1984 as the House Manager. Because Ed was such a people person, his work at Promised Valley Playhouse was nothing but a lot of fun for him. Ed's testimony reflected his love of the Savior and his fellow man. He always gave to those in need and he truly loved and cared for those he met, even to the end.
Ed is survived by his loving wife, Mary Pierce and children Jeri (Paul) Johnson, Terry Pierce and Gary (Kathy) Pierce. He is also the grandfather of four beautiful grandchildren, who he adored.
The family wishes to thank Drs. Long and Rassmussen and the loving nurses and staff of the TICU, the heart failure team at LDS Hospital, and IHC Hospice for their enduring love and dedication to Ed. A heart felt thanks goes out to the Hula Girls (nurses and pa's) for the smile they put on Ed's face the day they showed up to dance the hula for him.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 3, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Snow Creek Ward, 845 No. 1150 E., Layton. Friends and family may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Friday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at Lindquist's Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road, where military honors will be accorded by HAFB Honor Guard.
We'll miss you, but we know we'll see you again.
