Cordell Holt, 85, of Messer Road, Valdese, died Monday, May 14, 2007, at College Pines Nursing Center following a period of declining health. He enlisted in the US Army in 1937 at the age of 16 and re-enlisted in the US Army Air Corp in 1944. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 1965 from Waverly Air Force Base in Iowa. After his military service, Cordell worked for Bantam Koehring. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 116 in Waverly, Iowa.
He was born Nov. 23, 1921, in Stanley County, NC, and was a son of John Fairly Holt & Anna Harrington Holt. He moved back in 2006 to Valdese in 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Daugherty Holt; a son, Raymond Holt; a grandson, Timothy Holt; brothers, Wade and Hubert Holt; and a sister, Jewell Holt.
Cordell is survived by six children, Kenneth Holt and wife, Becky, of Dallas, Texas; Phillip Holt and wife, Donna, of Navarre, Fla.; Sheila Dolan and husband, Paul of Waverly, Iowa; Barbara Boomgarden and husband, David, of Valdese; Thomas Holt and wife, Kitty, of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and Mary Dana and husband, Greg, of Waverly, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 7 with the Rev. Tom Hartman officiating.
