The suitcase would ordinarily signal someone going or returning from leave...but we were TDY so much of the time and in so many places that its more likely another impending move.
I was 6'1" and Hubbard towered over me. He had the kind of muscles that imitate steel. There was a barracks incident where Hubbard and a room-mate (name tactfully omitted) let horseplay get a bit serious. The roommate outweighed Hubbard by 40 pounds. Hubbard picked him up with one hand under the crotch and one hand behind the head and threw him into the room lockers (which were closed). The roommate slid down to the floor, picked himself up, and said, "I'd like to see you do that again." So Hubbard did it again. This time, when the roommate got up, he went about his business.
Hubbard was a leader who could function equally well alone or in a group and had no enemies. Would love to hear from him.
