Base Air Police, with dogs, had guarded the alert hangar since it went operational in 1957. With the onset of nuclear missiles on the alert F-102s and in the squadron area, an attachment of Air Police was assigned to the squadron. Difficult at this point to acquire exact numbers and dates. The squadron history for the quarter concluding Dec 30, 1960, reports: Safety cannot be denied. A new Aircraft Calibration building which was subjected to the careful scruntiny and specifications of Capt. Charles E. Stewart, A&E Officer, sprung up, 5,000 square feet strong. This building is also included in the area cordoned by air police and electronic eyes. The Squadron was enveloped by a contingent of 40 Air Police, led by Capt. R. B. Joiner, Security officer, and T/Sgt. Baden. "Big brother is watching you," applies to all, and "big brother" takes the form of electronic eyes installed to completely secure the alert area.
There is no further mention of the AP unit in the available 482nd history reports (some are missing), including when they were returned to base command, 4th Air Police. Some say in late '62 or early '63 while others say 1964.
[HOWEVER --- Air Police assigned PCS to Detachments 1 & 2 remained assigned to the squadron.]
The partial listing below comes from randomly collected sets of orders which carried the AFCS number for Air Police - 771_0. [The fourth digit being a 3, 5, 7, or 9 proficiency rating number.]
If the initial 40 number mentioned above was in fact the unit's manpower ... then it proved to be insufficient when the Cuban Missile Crisis TDYs began. A number-required of regular troops were cross-trained to assist the Air Police as needed.
